CUC advances to finals; Ports Police, No Zone enter semis

THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. pulled off a 6-5 upset win over pennant champion Finance to move into the finals of the women’s division of the 2006 Inter-gov’t Softball League last Monday at the Miguel “Tan Ge’ Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
Terry Guerrero delivered the winning run on a Dolores Yanneris’ RBI.
With the game tied at 5-all after the seventh inning, CUC was at bat at the top of the eighth with Guerrero hitting first and advancing to first base on a shortstop-catcher error.
The next two CUC batters were struck out by Finance’s pitcher Bego Camacho.
Yanneris, who went 3-of-4, was fourth at bat hitting a double and driving Guerrero home to give CUC a 6-5 lead, entering the top of the eighth.
CUC’s Clarisa Sablan flied out to end the top of the final inning.
Finance, which took the pennant with a 7-3 record in the regular season, faltered in its finals bid attempt, as it failed to score a single run at the bottom of the eighth.
CUC’s pitcher Dolonina struck out Finance’s first two batters in the bottom of the eight.
Finance’s Liz Palacios was third at bat and hit a single, but was out in the next play when CUC’s second basewoman threw the ball to third base and beat Palacios.
Palacios passed the second base after a single hit by Liz Lebria, who was stranded at first base at the end of the match.
CUC will battle the winner of the DCCA-PSS semis match in a best-of-three title series.
DCCA and PSS were squaring off for the last finals berth yesterday but the results of the match were unavailable at press time.
Game 1 of the championship series will be played tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., while Game 2 is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled also for Friday at 9:30 p.m.
In the men’s division, Ports Police and No Zone advanced to Final Four after whipping Procurement and Supply and CUC I, respectively.
The Ports Police gained the first semis slot in the men’s division after blanking P&S, 13-0.
Rino Celis went 3-of-3 and had three runs, two homeruns and four RBIs. Jack Deleon Guerrero also helped the Ports Police cause going 3-of-3 and scoring two runs, one homerun and three RBIs.
Don Pangelinan pitched in no relief for the Ports Police in five innings and went 2-of-3. He also had two singles, one run and one RBI.
The Ports Police will face the winner of the Customs-Labor tiff in the semifinals tonight at 7:30 p.m. Customs and Labor were playing yesterday in the first game, while pennant champion DCCA was squaring off with the Legislature in the second match in the men’s division. The results of neither game was unavailable at press time.
The victor in the DCCA-Legislature match will fight No Zone, which notched the second semis ticket after downing CUC I, 17-7, for the first finals berth tonight at 6:30 p.m.
The men’s finals will be a best-of-three series with Game 1 set for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Game 2, if necessary, is set for the same day at 8:30 p.m.
