BoG warns of credit card scam

By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

THE Bank of Guam has received information that individuals representing themselves to be hired by BoG are randomly calling members of the public in hopes of obtaining financial data such as credit card account numbers and personal identification information.
The information is being requested in connection with an alleged “sweepstakes” winning that the person has supposedly won.
To claim the alleged winnings, persons are being asked to confirm whether they have certain credit cards. They are also told that to claim the prize, they must purchase a magazine subscription.
According to BoG, the bank has not, nor has it ever, operated such a sweepstakes program.
The bank is urging consumers to be cautious and not to disclose the financial or personal information being requested during such unsolicited calls.
In general, BoG said it is never a good idea to disclose financial information to anyone who a person is unable to personally identify.
For additional information or to report knowledge of the illegal sweepstakes scam, consumers can contact David C. Camacho, AVP/Chief of Security Bank of Guam at 472-5255 or 688-5093.
