GOVERNOR Felix P. Camacho appointed Guam Police Department assistant deputy chief of police Capt. Paul Suba to replace Frank Ishizaki on Friday during a GPD command inspection ceremony.
Ishizaki’s last day as the top cop was on Friday as he took a new oath yesterday that officially made him a republican senator in the 29th Guam Legislature. His successor, Suba, has been with the police department for close to 30 years.
During the hour-long ceremony on the Chief of Police’s courtyard in Tiyan, officials thanked Ishizaki for his hard work and efforts in “successfully moving the department forward.”
Governor Camacho commended Ishizaki’s hard work.
“It has been an honor serving as your governor for the past four years. I look forward to the next four years. There is still a lot of work left to do with this department. I can only think back and reflect on how much has been accomplished,” Camacho stated. “I need to commend him for his leadership as we have moved the police department from good to great; .from mediocre to superior. Outside of Micronesia GPD is well respected. Thank you chief for your leadership.”
Ishizaki was able to take about five minutes thanking officers in the department and Camacho as well. Before he listed his accomplishments he told officers that it is all about support.
“You can criticize all you want but I think we all need to roll up our sleeves. Let’s support the leadership, whoever he or she may be, and support this family team GPD. Because it is by working together, by standing together that we can achieve greatness for this department,” Ishizaki addressed guests and officers.
Ishizaki then enumerated the accomplishments while he was at the helm of the police department. The items included the boats, the new police cars, federal funding, automated reporting system, 300 plus officer promotions, and more.
“We have much more work to do. But I believe the biggest thing we can all share and enjoy is thanks to our leadership, thanks to our community, thanks to our business partners, we have earned the respect of the community. And that is such a vital commodity,” Ishizaki said proudly.
After all was said and done with commendations, Ishizaki remembered to thank his wife, Sharon.
“My wife has been a tremendous help. I cannot express my appreciation for her support. If anything smart came out of me it was because of her,” Ishizaki laughed.
It was not certain as of press time if Camacho’s appointment of Suba will be the final name submitted to the 29th Guam Legislature for their confirmation.
