HOD adopts resolution on convention of nuclear material

The House of Delegates has recently adopted a house joint resolution to ratify Palau’s accession to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, which was entered into force on Feb. 8, 1987.
Delegate William Ngiraikelau introduced HJR No. 7-57-23S as part of the government’s commitment to cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism.
Ngiraikelau noted that the Olbiil Era Kelulau has ratified 11 of the 12 international counter-terrorism conventions and protocols and that the country should cooperate with the international community’s goal for universal adoption of all 12 of the counter-terrorism conventions.
The Convention establishes levels of physical protection of nuclear material used for peaceful purposes while in international transport ands also provides measures against unlawful acts with respect to such material while in international transport.
Ngiraikelau said that the President has acceded to the Convention on behalf of Palau.
