A man who beat up and robbed another man last month was arrested on Saturday and then released from the custody of the Department of Corrections after he posted bail yesterday.
Benigno Muna Sablan, 24, was brought for a bail hearing on Tuesday before Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja who imposed a cash bail of $25,000.
Sablan was back in court yesterday morning for a bail modification hearing.
Naraja allowed Sablan’s father to past a 1997 Toyota Camry as a property bond.
Sablan was released to a third party custodian — his parents.
The court ordered that the bail run concurrent with the Sablan’s other criminal cases.
The affidavit of Detective Roque Camacho stated that on Dec. 20, 2006, at 1:17 a.m., police responded to a robbery report from Terry’s Store in San Antonio.
Police Officer Andrew Santos, upon arrival, saw a man whose nose was bleeding and had swollen lips.
The man was identified as Deng Hong Li who came to a barracks in San Antonio to drop off a friend.
When the friend got out of the victim’s car, Sablan got into the passenger seat without Deng Hong Li’s consent and told him to drive to the beachside area.
When Deng Hong Li refused he was punched by Sablan.
Deng Hong Li shouted to his friend to call the police.
Sablan immediately grabbed the victim’s wallet below the steering wheel and got out of the car.
Deng Hong Li tried to get his wallet back but was punched again by Sablan who fled the scene.
Deng Hong Li lost $460 in cash, his CHC blue card, PTI long distance cards and two airline tickets.
The incident was witnessed by a neighbor who positively identified Sablan as the one who beat up and robbed Deng Hong Li who also sustained scratches to his back, chest and hands.
Sablan was arrested on Saturday night in Susupe for robbery, assault and battery and disturbing the peace.
Sablan has a prior criminal history and is under supervised probation for a period of one year which has been extended for another 40 days and will expire on Feb. 7.
