UOG launches teacher certification program

Individuals who have a college degree can now earn their teacher certification in one year thanks to the University of Guam’s fast-track teacher certification program, which begins Feb. 3.
The program is designed for the convenience of individuals, especially those who work weekdays as the program holds all courses on Saturdays.
According to Dr. John Sanchez, UOG School of Education faculty member, the fast-track teacher certification program is ideal for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree and want to become middle or high school teachers.
Courses are offered on Saturdays, so participants can keep their current jobs. In addition, one course is offered at a time so participants are able to focus on one subject area.
This spring, four Saturday courses will be offered over six consecutive Saturdays. Courses run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In July 2007, participants will become full-time students and can seek employment with the Guam Public School System.
During the Fall 2007 semester, participants will enroll in the ED489 Evaluation and ED498 internship programs. Once the courses are complete, participants will become certified teachers.
“There are many teaching programs available in the Guam Public School System in a variety of areas. This fast-track program is a win-win situation as it offers people interested in becoming teachers a pathway to accomplish their goal within a short period of time while simultaneously providing GPSS with new teachers,” Sanchez said.
Interested individuals are invited to attend an information session on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at the UOG School of Business and Public Administration lecture hall to learn about the program’s details.
“I encourage anyone who is interested to attend the information session because the program will not open again until 2008,” Sanchez said.
