Chin will be the special guest of honor when the state leaders of Peleliu
led by re-elected Governor Jackson Ngiraingas take their oath of office
on Monday January 1.
Ngiraingas said they have already extended invitations to all the national
leaders of Palau including President Remengesau, ministers, members of
congress and the traditional chiefs.
We have chose the Vice President to give the special remarks because
we wanted to give an equal opportunity since the President was our special
guest the last time around, Ngiraingas said.
Both the countrys top two leaders are from Peleliu.
We would like the people to come, however, we expect that everybody
will have their own schedule since it will be new year on that same day.
But I wish them a very happy New Year especially the people of Peleliu,
Ngiraingas said.
He also wanted to thank those who voted him for another three years in
office adding that he feels and believes that the same people have confidence
on what he stands for and for the betterment of Peleliu.
Ngiraingas said that his main work will be to concentrate on the economic
development and has vowed to pursue plans for Nautilus City project because
he still believes that this would bring good investments, jobs and increase
tax for the state.
Those who will be inaugurated as At-Large Legislators are C. Desengei
Matsutaro, Billy B. Rekemel, Joseph Mtoched Giramur, Roman Ridep and Johannes
Tsuneo and for the different hamlets are Alex R. Ngiraingas (Ngerchol),
Kalbesang Soalablai (Ngerdelolk), Joe B. Nobuo (Ngesias), Ethiopia Pia
Mabel and Edwight Mengirarou (Ngerkeukl) and Gene Tkel (Teliu).
Ngiraingas got a total of 222 votes out of the 567 total votes cast while
Kangichi Uchau had 171 and Haruo Esang 151 during the Nov. Peleliu State
General Election.
Two of the three initiative petitions to amend the Constitution of Peleliu
won more YES votes while the other got more NO votes by a difference of
only one vote.
Initiative #1 did (Article VIII, Section 1. The Legislative power of Peleliu
shall be vested in the Peleliu State Legislature consisting of one house
composed of eleven (11) members popularly elected at large, for a term
of three years) got 269 YES votes while the NO votes had 270.
Initiative #2 (Article VIII, Section 3. A Council of Chiefs composed of
a traditional chief from each of the states shall advise the Governor
on matters concerning traditional laws, customs, and their relationship
to this Constitution and the laws of Peleliu State. The traditional chiefs
shall be compensated according to law) had 272 YES votes and 263 no votes.
Likewise Initiative #3 (Art. VIII Section 10. No person shall be a member
of the Council of Chiefs unless he has been appointed and accepted as
a chief in a traditional manner and is recognized as such by the traditional
council of chiefs of his hamlet. No chief shall serve in the Council of
Chiefs while serving as a member of the Peleliu State Legislature or the
cabinet) got 276 YES votes and 249 NO votes.
