AN all encompassing option
to improve the level of play for ballplayers on Guam is underway as organizers
ready to introduce the Wood Bat League to the islands up and coming
athletes.
Lead organizer Angel Calugay explained the concept behind the formation
of the Wood Bat League. Theres basically no push for Double
A and Triple A competition and this league keeps in line with the required
level of play. He added, Guam once got penalized and since
then theres been no push to conform.
According to Calugay, youngsters in the Babe Ruth and Little Leagues are
welcomed to the clinic style league. Were trying to kill two
birds with one stone at one time through this league. We want to keep
the Double and Triple A competitions going for the kids, we want to ensure
that the kids have that opportunity. And also to provide more baseball
outside of Little League and Babe Ruth so that theres more exposure
for them.
Its open to kids 14 18 and it will be a weekend ball
league, said Calugay. There will be practices at the Barrigada field
on Tuesdays and Thursdays
He welcomed all to play. The kids can sign up at our practice and
on Saturday at the Barrigada field. He reminded those contemplating
participating in the league that if they dont already have a wood
bat they would need one for the league.
The organization is inviting all interested players, coaches and volunteers
to come out to the Barrigada Field on Saturday at 10 a.m. to learn more
about the free league.
Calugay dropped some names that are involved with the league organization.
We have big league coordinator Pat Leon Guerrero, Tim Santos, A.J.
Aguon, Jarrett Barcinas, and some others.
Calugay added that the league has approached some business and community
organizations for financial support for the league.
