GINA Sablan and Jeremy Williams
captured the Queen and Prince of the Lanes titles in yesterdays
finals of the year-long tenpin bowling tournament at the Saipan Bowling
Center.
Sablan and Williams overcame all competitions thrown against them beating
higher-ranked opponents in the step-ladder finals.
Sablan, who won the first monthly Queen of the Lanes roll-off in January
last year, finished fourth after the eight-game final roll-off with a
total of 1,316 pinfalls.
Diane Camacho topped the eight-game roll-off with 1,440 pins followed
by the 1,403 of Bowler Ranking System point leader Emi Williams.
Ron Cal, third 1,346; Marie Manansala, fifth 1,309; Jerrie Vales and Rizza
Hensley, tied for sixth 1,295, completed the step-ladder finalists.
Sixth ranked Vales and Hensley met Cal in the elimination round with the
youthful Vales beating her veteran opponents.
The 16-year old Vales knocked down 195 pins besting Hensleys 169
and the 143 scored by Cal.
Vales then scored a 186-168 win over Camacho in the semifinals to grab
the first finals ticket.
Sablan, meanwhile, defeated Manansala in the elimination, 153-145, and
pulled off a 183-155 win over Williams in the semis to arrange a title
showdown with Vales.
The veteran Sablan then showed nerves of steel in the finals especially
when Vales was trying to catch up with her score.
Sablan defeated Vales, 167-140, in the finals to earn the 2006 Queen of
the Lanes crown.
In the youth league, the third-ranked Williams and the fourth-seeded Zack
Cruz arranged a finals showdown after knocking off the top two finishers.
Williams scored a 212-193 win over No. 2 Christielyn Camacho while Cruz
defeated top qualifier Tony Cruz, 169-146.
Williams then pulled off a 181-172 victory over Cruz in the finals to
claim the inaugural Prince of the Lanes title.
