Solomons to evict illegal occupants of gov’t houses

HONIARA (Pacnews) — The Solomon Islands government has warned people not entitled to live in government quarters to vacate them immediately.
The warning comes from public service permanent secretary, Ishmael Avui, after various attempts by government to evict illegal occupants fell on deaf ears.
“These illegal occupants include former politicians and public officials,” Avui said.
Avui said the department of lands will issue eviction notices.
He said in the event illegal occupants refuse to be evicted the police will be called in.
Avui said it is important to deal with the problem of illegal occupants in government housing as government is spending too much on house rentals for politicians and public officers.
He said the action is necessary because government had spent more than $25 million alone in 2006.
