Visiting scholar to discuss women’s rights

(NMI HUMANITIES COUNCIL) — University of Arkansas Law School Dean Dr. Cynthia Nance will present a series of public lectures on women’s rights as a part of a program to commemorate the Commonwealth’s first official observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
During her 90-minute lecture entitled “Education and Empowerment of Women through the Civil Rights Movement,” Nance will focus on women of color and their changing status over time.
Nance will also provide quotations from prominent women of color about their lives and struggles and reflect on her own life’s journey and how the Civil Rights agenda has empowered her.
Nance was the first female and first black dean of the University of Arkansas School of Law.
She earned MA, JD and PhD degrees from the University of Iowa College of Business and has made presentations on a variety of issues affecting civil rights in the United States.
The lecture series will begin on Rota on Friday, Jan. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room B5 at Northern Marianas College.
On Saturday, Jan. 13, Nance will present the lecture at the Fleming Restaurant on Tinian from 6 to 8 p.m.
The series will conclude with a lecture on Saipan, on Monday, Jan. 15, at the American Memorial Visitors Center Theater beginning at 6 pm.
All lectures are open to the public and free of charge.
The lecture series is a part of a larger project sponsored by the African American Heritage Planning Committee to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King in conjunction with the national holiday in his honor that will be celebrated throughout the United States on Jan. 15.
The program was funded in part by a grant awarded by the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities under its We the People initiative entitled “Embracing Democracy: Vignettes from the Northern Mariana Islands.”
