University
of Arkansas Law School Dean Dr. Cynthia Nance will present a series of
public lectures on womens rights as a part of a program to commemorate
the Commonwealths first official observance of Martin Luther King
Jr. Day.
During her 90-minute lecture entitled Education and Empowerment
of Women through the Civil Rights Movement, Nance will focus on
women of color and their changing status over time.
Nance will also provide quotations from prominent women of color about
their lives and struggles and reflect on her own lifes journey and
how the Civil Rights agenda has empowered her.
Nance was the first female and first black dean of the University of Arkansas
School of Law.
She earned MA, JD and PhD degrees from the University of Iowa College
of Business and has made presentations on a variety of issues affecting
civil rights in the United States.
The lecture series will begin on Rota on Friday, Jan. 12, from 6 to 8
p.m. in Room B5 at Northern Marianas College.
On Saturday, Jan. 13, Nance will present the lecture at the Fleming Restaurant
on Tinian from 6 to 8 p.m.
The series will conclude with a lecture on Saipan, on Monday, Jan. 15,
at the American Memorial Visitors Center Theater beginning at 6 pm.
All lectures are open to the public and free of charge.
The lecture series is a part of a larger project sponsored by the African
American Heritage Planning Committee to commemorate the life and legacy
of Dr. Martin Luther King in conjunction with the national holiday in
his honor that will be celebrated throughout the United States on Jan.

The program was funded in part by a grant awarded by the Northern Mariana
Islands Council for the Humanities under its We the People initiative
entitled Embracing Democracy: Vignettes from the Northern Mariana
Islands.
