Japanese WWII live grenade found

By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

MEMBERS of the Andersen Air Force Base’s 36th Wing explosive ordnance disposal team responded to an unexploded ordnance found near Mangilao yesterday.
The team from Andersen responded at the request of the Guam Police Department after a Guam Waterworks Authority worker unearthed a World War II grenade in the area where the proposed Adacao School is to be built.
The Andersen EOD team retrieved a Japanese Type 97 hand grenade, which dates back to World War II, without incident.
“Our EOD team trains continually to respond to situations such as this. Safety is our number one priority, and we are happy to assist Guam officials in this matter,” said Col. Joel Westa, 36th Wing vice commander
GPD is reminding the public that if an unexploded device is found off-base, people should always contact Guam Police Department’s non-emergency number at 475-8616 or 472-8911.
