SUPERIOR Court Associate Judge
David A. Wiseman says there is probable cause to believe that a man charged
with hitting another man with a baseball bat committed the offense.
Basilio Selepeo Taman has been detained for assault with a dangerous weapon
and assault and battery.
He appeared in court for a bail modification hearing yesterday and was
represented by Assistant Public Defender Adam Hardwicke. The government
was represented by Assistant Attorney General Kevin Lynch.
Taman was allowed to post a $25,000 property or unsecured bond.
But the court also ordered his counsel to provide a certification of title
of the property.
Taman was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after
the hearing, and arraignment was set for Jan. 16, 2007 at 9 a.m.
Taman, 31, was arrested on January 1 for striking Mohammed Ruhul Amin
in the head with a baseball bat.
Ramin was at the parking lot of the Garapan mosque at 10:22 p.m. and was
opening the door of his van when he was struck in the head by Taman.
Ramin fell to his knees and was trying to get up while covering his head
when Taman struck his hand with the baseball bat.
Taman was subdued by bystanders and held until the arrival of responding
police officers.
The victim was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment.
He sustained injuries in the head and had a fractured knee cap.
