GMH has new neurosurgeon

By Mar-Vic Cagurangan

THE Guam Memorial Hospital has hired a neurosurgeon from Hawaii to treat severe head trauma, skull fractures, brain tumors and ruptured cerebral aneurysms, among other things.
Dr. Steven Hayashida has been contracted on an on-call basis to treat urgent cases, for an annual salary of $350,000.
“He will fill a job here that takes a tremendous workload off our surgeons and that will provide a higher level of service and care to our people,” acting Gov. Mike Cruz said at Friday’s press conference held at GMH, where Hayashida was introduced.
“For our patients who need this care, this means they will get the care they need right here at home.”
GMH officials said Hayashida’s practice at the hospital eases the surgical workload for other surgeons and provides a more specialized focus on this discipline of surgery.
