CONGRESSWOMAN Madeleine Z.
Bordallo was officially assigned to two important subcommittees within
the House Armed Services Committee.
These are the Subcommittee on Readiness, and the Subcommittee on Seapower
and Expeditionary Forces.
These subcommittees have broad oversight responsibility for issues important
to the military build-up on Guam and to U.S. service members and their
families.
According to Bordallo, these subcommittee assignments reflect priorities
important to the Guam community.
The Readiness Subcommittee oversees the military construction budget,
including projects that will be authorized for the upcoming relocation
of Marines to Guam, while the Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee
oversees Navy and Marine Corps programs important to the Pacific and to
U.S. bases on Guam.
In addition, the subcommittee is responsible for the military construction
budget, family housing, and base closures and realignments. It also has
jurisdiction over military readiness and maintenance and logistics programs,
including most operations and maintenance issues for military services.
In her work on the Subcommittee on Readiness in the 109th Congress, Bordallo
secured, among other items, over $320 million in military construction
projects for Guam and won passage of an amendment to the annual Defense
Authorization Act to help secure and build the future of the Guam Shipyard.
On the other hand, the Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces
is a renamed subcommittee and has largely acquired the jurisdiction of
the Subcommittee on Projection Forces from the previous Congress.
The Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces has jurisdiction
over all Naval and Marine Corps programs, maritime programs, including
the Maritime Security Program, National Defense Sealift, and Naval Reserve
equipment.
Bordallo has been a leading voice within the House Armed Services Committee
for increasing production of Virginia class submarines to two a year,
and to moving more submarines in the fleet to the Pacific, including to
Guam.
Bordallo intends to continue to advocate for these objectives through
her work on the Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces.
The congresswoman has served on the Subcommittee on Readiness since the
108th Congress, her first term in 2003. She has served for the past two
years as a member of the Subcommittee on Projection Forces, which has
been renamed the Subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces for
the 110th Congress.
Bordallo expects to receive her subcommittee assignments in the House
Resources Committee and in the House Small Business Committee when these
committees organize in the next few weeks.
