Tried and true Cougars to host 5K

By R. Vincent Tupaz
For Variety

WANTING to strengthen their ability to offer scholarships and provide tuition assistance, the Academy of Our Lady of Guam is set to celebrate its fifth annual 5K “Fund” Run/Walk.
Supported by a strong alumnae, the AOLG 5K set for this Saturday is certain to be competitive in a family fun atmosphere. Go time is set for 6:00 a.m. and registration will be accepted through the morning of race day. Meantime, those interested in participating may register at the AOLG Business Office, Hornet Sporting Goods in Tamuning or at the Paradise Fitness Center. The cost for entry is $10 per person and $5 per students, 18 and under. Race day registration will cost $12 if you register the morning of the race.
The route of the race will traverse from the AOLG grounds through the streets of Guam’s Capital city of Hagatna, onto West O’Brien Dr. and on Marine Drive. More specifically, the race starts at Archbishop Flores St. in front of the Pacific News Building towards Chalan Santo Papa and left in front of the Cathedral Basilica. Participants will trek straight down towards the Justice Building and round the corner and take a right onto West O’Brien Dr. and run a relatively straight course to 9 th St. Racers will then turn right onto 9 th St. and right onto Marine Dr. through to the Staywell Building where they will merge onto West Soledad Avenue and race to Rt 4. At the Rt. 4 intersection participants will round the corner of Rt. 4 up to West Obrien Dr. and head back to AOLG.
Organizers called on all to participate and join the cause. “Parents, friends, and alumnae are asked to help out and join in the fun!”
Recognition and awards will be offered to top finishers in the “General Categories”. And special AOLG Alumnae awards will be bestowed including the “The Most Spirited Class” which is reportedly the most coveted recognition among the alumnae.
The inaugural 5 K was held in 2003 and has become a tradition with many of its participants, stated organizers. The Academy, established in 1949, graduated its first class in 1953. Since then, more than four thousand women passed through the halls of the Academy.
This year, the run will honor graduates of its class of 1957 in celebration of their 50th class reunion. “This year’s main sponsors include Royal Bic’s, Bank of Guam, Ada ‘s Trust & Investment, Inc., and DFS Galleria.” AOLG invited all to call 477-8203 “if you are interested in helping out with this event or would like more information. Start the New Year on the right foot! Come ride, walk, or even run and have some fun with the Academy.”
