Island views & night fishing

By Nazario Rodriguez Jr.
Horizon news staff

The weather was perfect. It was high tide but the water was calm and the orange sun was setting on to the south sky.
On this particular Friday, we were just lucky to have been invited by no less than the Governor of Peleliu, Jackson Ngiraingas, to a three-day, two-night stay in his Rock Island. We reached the spot at around 7 p.m. and the tide already ate-up most of the white sand beach that is the main attraction of this speck of a real Eden.
How’s that for one who spent almost his entire life in a city and hear the noise of factories, smoke-belching cars and stereo sounds that could break your ears?
After our hosts, the Governor, his brothers Alex, Bao, nephews Jordi and Isiah, showed and offered all the things you needed such us kitchen utensils, sleeping mats, folding beds, kayak, food and other stuffs, the Island suddenly became your possession.
For a start, you spent with Alan and Romeo until 11 p.m. catching snappers while reminiscing about your childhood experiences in your homeland and find similarities with the simple life in this island of singing birds, friendly crabs and other sea creatures.
Then, on the morning you could see the sharks speeding right through your direction while you’re jogging through the beach.
Then after squatting lazily underneath coconut and pine trees, you found out later that your host served lobster, fish of different varieties and cooked in different styles and flavors. Then, after your bunch of lunch, it’s nice again to rest after doing nothing.
The best way to throw away the cholesterol is to spear fish under fallen trees, which are lying at the bottom of the water and beatify the scenery.
If you’re an amateur, you’re really get angry when you miss your target and then you’re done when you hit alone big barracuda but gone with the spear.
So, you end on sightseeing and feel the breeze and occasional drizzle.
From afar, you could view the green lush and towering rock like twin mushrooms. It’s really amazing how those trees have grown for centuries on top of the rocks and how the Island’s Master, our host, keep its beauty and richness intact.
Then the finale for the trip was the night fishing in the German Channel and in the Long Beach and in the open ocean.
With a school of sharks playing all around you and go after your catch, and Mavic could even catch one and let it go.
Isiah, our brave boy, was our entertainer, telling tales about his rich experiences at sea. His laughter is for real.
Although, Mikmik could not catch one fish, she had the opportunity of swimming with them unharmed.
On our your way home, you could say that it’s nice really to live with nature’s way as you enjoy the views all around you. But it’s even nicer to take care of it and share with others its bounty.
