THE Historic Preservation
Office will investigate a pile of scrap metal on Tinian after it received
a report that it could include parts of a B-29 Superfortress aircraft
and other World War II relics.
HPO Executive Director Roy Sablan said upon receiving the report, he asked
their staff on Tinian to examine the scrap metal and submit a report.
The metal is piled behind Listo Print Shop in San Jose village.
We received a report from a Tinian resident and I immediately instructed
our HPO staff on Tinian to investigate the matter, Sablan told Variety
yesterday, adding that they still did not know if aircraft parts were
found in the pile of metal.
Sablan said HPO is coordinating with the Tinian Department of Public Safety
to expedite the evaluation of the metal.
I understand that DPS has already put on hold the shipment of scrap
materials until the investigation is completed, he said, adding
that the materials were scheduled for shipment to Saipan today.
Sablan said they will disclose more information once they complete their
evaluation.
Public Law 15-36 regulates the recycling businesses operating on the islands.
The law requires sellers to show proof that the junk materials they are
selling belong to them.
