SOME folks criticize
the PDN for their editorial views but that is what those comments are
for. To be critiqued. However, I never read an editorial which was mean,
cruel or in poor taste but I also never read an editorial unduly praising
Guam or the U.S. in a jingoistic manner.
It is all issue-oriented and comes off as a matter-of-fact.
I wonder if the same folks criticize KUAM for their TV-coverage
in the words of one Dr. George Macris and their biasness and slants which
are more subtle. For example, on the evening broadcast of the 29th, one
of the anchors (on KUAM) said Historic inauguration and . . . great
island of Guam. Is that news or editorial comment? There is a time
for superlatives and you can get it on TV editorials from
former Senator Tony Blaz (who was terrific in 2000 when he called
out Gov. Carl T.C. Guttierrez).
There are other segments on KUAM such as PRIMETIME news which makes it
more interesting to watch than the up-and-coming but bland ABC 7. This
is not to say that the media execs who run the show on KUAM are necessarily
biased in any way but competition is a great thing even in a small market
like Guam.
On Newstalk K-57, for example, I cringe every time I hear a talk-show
host sing praises of Bush or the GOP but that is to be expected as the
right dominates the talk-radio circuit. And the GOP relies on these ideologues
to flood the airwaves with their bent on things to keep the people confused
about the real truth as it pertains to crucial policy matters such as
Iraq, taxes and health-care.
The age-old question still remains: Are the media outlets telling us what
we want to hear or are they telling us the truth in an unvarnished manner?
Are they playing on our fears and worries and treat us like fools?
