THE Mwaliyas and Black Magic resumed their title bid in the World Organized Rocball Community League on a winning note downing separate foes at the Marianas High School Gym.
Black Magic started the action in the second round of the tournament meeting Kich Fairo last Tuesday.
The league took a holiday break and resumed last Tuesday with only six teams advancing in the second round. Four of the 10 participating teams were eliminated.
Black Magic and Kich Fairo played only half of the match last Tuesday with the former leading by nine, 34-25, in the third set.
Black Magic took the first set, 15-7, Kich Fairo recovered in the second with a 15-13 triumph.
Black Magic was leading in the third set, 6-3, when the game was halted, as students needed to return to class.
When the game resumed last Wednesday, Black Magic had more tricks to show helping them nail a 16-12 victory.
Down by 10 at the end of the third set, 44-34, Kich Fairo needed to prevail in the fourth set to send the game in overtime.
Kich Fairo seemed headed for an extension with Zerolyn Fiden anchoring the team to a 6-0 lead.
But Kich Fairo failed to sustain its momentum, as Black Magic recovered and notched a 17-9 victory for a juiced-out win.
Joe Taitano, JJ Mality and John Nekaifes led Black Magic with eight points apiece.
Nekaifes had three aces and one xunx, Mality scored an ace, two xunxs and a kee and Taitano fired three aces and a jam.
Seven aces, four xunxs, one jam, two kees and one goal were scored in the game.
In the second match in the second round of the annual tournament, the Mwaliyas also claimed a juiced-out win beating Da Lani Kynez yesterday, 62-27.
The defending champions won three of four sets for a 1-0 start in the second round, which has a round-robin playoff format.
In the round robin format, the six qualifying teams will have five games each. The top four teams after the round-robin playoff will advance to the semifinals with the No. 1 team playing the No. 4 squad and the No. 2 team battling the No. 3 squad.
Other teams that qualified in the second round are the Dublon Chiefs and Watch & Learn. The Ballers, Bwi Bwiis, Caropinos and 670’s Finest have been eliminated.
Gary Philip led the Mwaliyas’ strong start firing 16 points on seven aces and a kee.
The Mwaliyas controlled the first set winning by 12, 16-4.
In the second set, Da Lani Kynez still failed to find its rhythm and the Mwaliyas with Shana Yamada starting the game with a goal limited their foe to four points anew for a 13-point win in that set, 17-4.
Da Lani Kynez finally notched a set, but it was a hard-earned win, as they led by only a hair, 15-14, in the third set
With the Mwaliyas up by 24, 47-23, entering the final set, Da Lani Kynez must prevail in the fourth set to force an o-kon.
But for the third time, Da Lani Kynez was held to four points and the Mwaliyas walked away with an 11-point triumph, 15-4, to end the match.
Sixteen aces, 15 kees and a goal were scored in the game.
