Crime Stoppers, local businesses join hands for Hattig mini camp

By Jonathan V. Perez
Variety News Staff

CRIME Stoppers and local businesses joined hands in helping the Saipan Little League organize the two-day mini camp to be conducted by Major Leaguer JR Hattig next week.
Saipan Little League Baseball Association vice president Mike Borja said Jerry Ayuyu of Crime Stoppers made it possible for the Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Hattig to come to Saipan and hold a free clinic for local kids.
Hattig, the first Guam/Micronesian player to make it to the major league, will hold a mini camp on Jan. 27 and 28 at the Oleai Sports Complex.
The SLLBA will hold a press conference on Monday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym conference room to let the public know of Hattig’s arrival.
Power 99 took care of Hattig’s airfare and he will be staying at PIC in San Antonio. Microl Toyota will provide transportation for Hattig.
JG Sablan Ice & Water and Pacific Trading Co. are also major sponsors for Hattig’s trip to Saipan.
The SLLBA want all kids to grab the chance to learn from a Major League professional player.
Borja said the mini camp is open not only to kids who will be playing in the upcoming Little League season. The camp is open to all interested participants. Even if you do not have a team in the Little League you can participate.
Hattig, who was born in Tamuning and resides in Dededo, will arrive on Saipan on Jan. 26, Friday. He played 13 games this season in the MLB posting a .333 batting average and getting three RBIs.
For more information about the mini camp, call Borja at 322-0340 or 322-9888/9451 or Ayuyu at 287-9104.
Local players in the four divisions of the SLLB also had the chance to learn from former New York Mets pitcher Kouichi Taniguchi in August last year.
