CUC replaces 2 Beach Rd. power poles

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

THE Commonwealth Utilities Corporation on Friday scheduled a power outage in Garapan to replace two power poles along Beach Road.
CUC spokeswoman Pamela Mathis said termites had infested the two poles – one in front of Microl in San Jose and the other in the Chalan Laulau area.
The poles she said, posed a danger to traffic and pedestrians.
She said CUC linemen started working simultaneously on the two power poles.
The two new poles were erected a couple of feet from the existing ones making it necessary to turn the power off so that CUC personnel using heavy equipment could work safely.
The power outage began at 12 noon Friday at the Garapan electric grid called Feeder 2. The power was back on after 4 p.m.
CUC, Mathis said, had to isolate the outage from the Horiguchi Building all the way to Microl at the intersection of Beach Road and Chalan Monsignor Guerrero in San Jose.
CUC also anticipated that the power pole replacement project would not take longer than four hours.
Motorists were encouraged to avoid driving on Beach Road from Garapan to San Jose as crewmen and vehicles partly blocked the road.
The traffic lights at the Microl intersection did not work during the outage, which made the intersection a four-way stop.
