The House of
Delegates issued yesterday a subpoena duces tecum to Ministers Elbuchel
Sadang of Finance and Temmy Shmull of State to appear before the committee
on judiciary and governmental affairs.
The committee hearing is set at 2 p.m. on Thursday next week Jan. 25 at
the HOD chamber, where Sadang and Shmull will testify regarding the grant
aid from Republic of China (Taiwan) described commonly as the Stimulus
Fund.
The JGA committee chaired by Del. Kerai Mariur ordered Sadang and Shmull
to furnish any and all agreements between Palau and Taiwan.
The subpoena, which was signed by Speaker Augustine Mesebeluu and Mariur
and served by HOD Sgt. At Arms Alfonso Seklii, also ordered the two misters
to provide any other grant award document or other documents under which
such grant aid was awarded.
They are also ordered to present all related banking transaction histories
and any other supporting documents relating to the same issue.
The subpoena duces tecum said that failure for Sadang and Shmull to comply
may be deemed in contempt of the Olbiil Era Kelulau, punishable by a fine
of not more than $1,000 or imprisonment for not more than one year or
both.
On Friday, Kaleb Udui Jr., receiver of the defunct Pacific Savings Bank,
appeared before the House Committee on Ways and Means and Financial Matters,
chaired by Del. Antonio Bells after a similar subpoena was served to him.
Udui was ordered to answer questions regarding deposits and withdrawals
made to and from Pacific Savings Bank and to provide pertinent documents
related to the bank and its recent closure.
Transcripts of last Fridays hearings are still being worked out
as of press time yesterday.
