Mt. Carmel’s Deleon Guerrero to seek BOE seat

By Moneth G. Deposa
Variety News Staff

MOUNT Carmel School principal Galvin Deleon Guerrero yesterday said he will run for one of the three open Board of Education seats in November.
Deleon Guerrero, a former regent of Northern Marianas College and special assistant for special projects in the previous administration, said he wanted to run in 2005 but was advised by some of his relatives “to wait.”
“Now is the time,” he told Variety.
So far, none of the three incumbent BOE members — Roman Benavente, Marja Lee Taitano, and Dino Jones — have made an announcement about their intention to seek another term.
Deleon Guerrero is the first individual to announce his candidacy for the education board.
With over 10 years of educational experience, Deleon Guerrero said he wants to help create an “educated workforce” that will help improve the local economy.
“I want to give back to the community…because I believe that a society with an educated population can have a better economy,” he said. “When you have an educated workforce…you can create a better economy and that’s for the long term.”
Deleon Guerrero said he will continue to serve as Mt. Carmel School principal if given the chance to serve BOE.
He said he doesn’t support the current board members’ proposal to compensate themselves for attending BOE committee meetings.
According to Deleon Guerrero, due to the current financial situation of the Public School System, providing extra compensation to board members would send the “wrong message” to students.
