BOE’s Jones will not seek re-election

BOARD of Education Vice Chairman Dino M. Jones will not seek re-election and will instead run for one of the seats in the House of Representatives.
Besides Jones, who is a former House member, the seats of BOE member Marja Lee Taitano and Chairman Roman C. Benavente are also up for grabs in November.
The three comprise the majority bloc on the board.
Benavente and Taitano, in separate interviews, said they have yet to decide if they will seek re-election.
“Whatever my decision will be…for sure it will be for the good of a great number of people particularly of our students,” Benavente said yesterday.
Jones, for his part, said he is “planning to return to the Legislature and give others the opportunity to be on the Board of Education.”
He added that he welcomes the news that “young and dedicated educators” like Mt. Carmel School principal Galvin Deleon Guerrero wants to serve the Public School System.
Jones, who has also served on the board in the past, described his past three years with BOE as “very fruitful.”
He said many issues were addressed by the board in cooperation with PSS.
According to Jones, his decision to seek a House seat was motivated by his desire to again serve his constituents in Precinct 4.
He said he “cannot say no to the people who believe” in him.
“They are the main reason why I made the decision to run again….they want my service,” Jones said.
BOE, he added, needs new members with new ideas for PSS.
“The board needs new ideas…a new generation of members that will share their talents and wisdom for the improvement of education,” he said.
