Third quarter sports on the upswing

MIDDLE school soccer began yesterday with eight of the 10 teams playing ball at various fields throughout the island.
At the Harvest Field in Toto, St. Anthony went against Harvest, while St. Paul hosted San Vicente and St. John’s challenged St. Francis. At the University of Guam field, DODEA’s William McCool Middle School challenged Bishop. Anderson and Santa Barbara enjoyed a couple extra days of practice with a bye, but will play each other on Friday. Game results were not available as of Variety’s press time yesterday.
The schedule of the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Middle school soccer league boasts a schedule of Tuesday and Friday games for the girls playing in the 10 team league.
Also slated for Friday play will be the Eagles from Harvest taking on San Vicente and St. Francis challenging St. Paul.
St. John’s, McCool, St. Anthony, Bishop will have a bye this Friday.
Meantime in other IIAAG sports, at the high school level, the Father Duenas Friars on Saturday beat the Simon Sanchez Sharks in the opening weekend game of the ’07 Rugby season, 10-5. The Southern High Dolphins schooled the George Washington Geckos, 15-7 and the Norte Dame Royals crushed the John F. Kennedy Islanders, 41-12. The Lady Royals were champs over the Lady Geckos, 50-7 and the Lady Sharks chomped on the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars, 22-14. High school Boys’ and Girls’ Rugby games continue this Sunday at the Wettengel Field in Dededo beginning at noon.
In wrestling action, the Guam High Panthers continue to dominate the IIAAG league after they beat Sanchez, 54-18. Sanchez remains in search of its wrestling team’s first “W.” The FD Friars matched their Rugby team boasting a win over the Geckos, 36-24 and improve to 2 wins, 1 loss for the season and the Dolphins lost to the Islanders, 66-6 with most matches won via forfeit. Wrestling continues this evening at the FD gym in Mangilao at 6:30 p.m.
