Volunteer groups urged to arrange for timely trash hauling

((DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality is reminding organizations that coordinate and/or participate in cleanup activities, such as beach cleanups, adopt a beach, adopt a road, etc. to ensure proper arrangements have been made for trash hauling.
The effort and time spent to beautify and clean our parks, beaches and roadways is futile if trash and trash bags are piled up and then abandoned.
Cleanup activities are meant to remove or reduce solid waste, not create new dumping grounds, or generate more garbage. Improper disposal of trash is a magnet for stray dogs, cats, rats and other critters in search of food. The trash that spills from the bags may be scattered by the rain and wind.
Recently, an unidentified group cleaned the areas in or around San Vicente and Laulau Bay, leaving a pile of trash bags next to a bus stop. The office of Rep. Cinta M. Kaipat removed the debris, totaling 420 lbs.
Everyone who takes the initiative to clean and beautify our environment should be commended. This notice serves as a reminder to include proper disposal or collection of trash at the cleanup sites on the day of the cleanup. Please be discouraged from leaving garbage bags overnight.
For more information about road or beach cleanups, contact DEQ at 664-8500 or the Marianas Visitors Authority at 664-3200.
