JAMES Abuy buried five 3-pointers
to lead Pacific Islands Club to a 91-70 thrashing of Hafa Adai Beach Hotel
as action continued in the 2006-2007 Inter-Hotel Basketball League/HANMI
Cup last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
In the first game, Marianas Resort & Spa leaned on the hot shooting
of Jayson Gatdula in pulling off a 61-49 triumph over World Resort Hotel.
Abuy scattered 22 points including three straight 3-pointers to help PIC
pull away in the fourth period.
It was the third win in five games for PIC while Hafa Adai suffered its
third loss in four matches.
Hafa Adais loss wasted the 37-point explosion of the streak-shooting
Peter Iguel.
A win by Hafa Adai would have been a fitting follow up in their 106-82
rout of World Resort last week; instead, PIC ended their celebration.
PIC built an early 10-point advantage, 27-17, in the first quarter but
Michael Olaitiman led a Hafa Adai rally in the second period scoring 10
of his teams 25 points to tie the game at 42-all entering the halftime
break.
PIC, led by Alfred Fernandez eight markers, again distanced themselves
from Hafa Adai establishing a 67-58 lead heading into the fourth period.
PIC stepped on the gas further in the final 10 minutes of play to finally
silence Hafa Adai.
Fernandez scored 21 points to back up Abuys 22-point finish. Richard
Pambid had a double-double performance with 18 points and 11 rebounds
while Raymund Tolentino had 13 points.
Iguel had 37 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead Hafa Adais
losing cause. Olaitiman had 17 points, two rebounds, four assists and
two steals.
Earlier, Marians Resort caused World Resort to suffer its fifth straight
loss walking away with a 61-49 win.
Gatdula scored 19 points while Dennis Sebastian added 18 to help Marianas
Resort improve its win-loss record to 2-4.
Alvin Palma, Jim Navarro and Rogel Caruana chipped in 11, 10 and 10 points.
World Resort even led 14-13 after 10 minutes of play and held on to a
32-29 advantage at the half.
Marianas Resort made their move in the second half when they outscored
World Resort, 32-17. They held their opponents to a season-low seven points
in the fourth quarter.
