With the personal advice of
High Chief Reklai Raphael Ngirmang, an organization of Filipinos who are
based in Melekeok State was created with the sole objective -- unity.
All the 45 Filipino contract workers showed up during their first meeting
and election of officers last Saturday night (Jan. 20) at the Old Age
Center with Chief Reklai as their guest speaker.
Willing to be under the tutelage of The Filipino Community in Palau, the
organization chose to be named as Melekeok Filipino Community Club .
Elected President William Blasquino explained that association was the
idea of Chief Reklai, who told them his recognition for their contribution
to the improvement and progress in Melekeok.
Blasquino said that Chief Reklai wanted them to be a model for other states
to create their own organization.
"I want you to feel as members of the community," he said.
Chief Reklai said he does not want anyone to be called as domestic helper.
"You are doing a big favor to our members of the family," he
said.
As construction workers or government or state employees, Chief Reklai
said Palau gained a lot from the Filipinos skills.
"We want all of you to be treated as ordinary citizens of not only
Melekeok but of Palau. We want to reciprocate your big contribution to
the development of our country by our traditional hospitality," Chief
Reklai said.
Issues discussed include relationship between the employers and employees,
their protection and benefits and as well as how the group would be able
to hold activities for the benefit of not only for its members but for
the community and other related services.
The group is now preparing to meet with Ambassador Ramoncito Marino for
their oath taking ceremony.
Other elected officers were Bro. Ronnie Aquino (Vice President), Jane
Ramos (Secretary), Mae Charize Lopez (Treasurer), Tita Briones (Auditor)
and Cely Blasquino (Press Relations Officer). They also elected two Sgt.-At-Arms
and seven members of the Board.
