By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

THE University of Guam has received a three-year $300,000 grant from the Internal Revenue Service to establish a clinic for low-income taxpayers.
The clinic will provide outreach, education and other services. It will be located in the Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration Building.
UOG School of Business and Public Administration faculty members and students in the accounting and related fields will provide services to eligible individuals at the clinic, which is scheduled to open in February 2007.
School of Business and Public Administration Faculty members Dr. Melba Cantoria and Doreen Crisostomo are the project director and assistant director, respectively.
The IRS has awarded $7 million in matching fund grants to various tax-exempt organizations and academic institutions under its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic program.
The LITC grant program, soon entering its 10th year, helps organizations provide low-cost legal assistance to taxpayers to resolve tax disputes.
In addition, LITCs inform and educate taxpayers for whom English is a second language regarding their tax rights and responsibilities.
Many taxpayers are helped each year by the clinics. For many of these taxpayers, the clinics are a low-cost means of getting assistance when they have tax problems or are trying to comply with tax laws.
