HOD adopts resolution on protection of nuclear material; defers fish stocks agreement

The House of Delegates has adopted on Wednesday Jan. 24 the joint resolution to ratify Palau’s accession to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.
HJR No. 7-57-23S, SD1, which was introduced by Floor Leader William Ngiraikelau, said is part of the country’s commitment and cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism.
The resolution said that the OEK has ratified 11 international counterterrorism conventions and protocols thus Palau should cooperate with the international community.
The Convention, which entered into force on Feb. 8, 1987, established levels of physical protection of nuclear material used of peaceful purposes while in international transport.
It also provided measures against unlawful acts with respect to such material while in international transport.
Earlier, the Senate on Tuesday Jan. 23 adopted the same house joint resolution.
Meanwhile, the HOD deferred another joint resolution seeking to accede to the United Nations Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea.
This convention is in connection with the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and High Migratory Fish Stocks.
HJR No. 7-39-6, SD1, which was introduced by Speaker Augustine Mesebeluu, was earlier adopted on Tuesday Jan. 3 in the Senate.
