L&S, Fiesta Inter end season on high note

By Jonathan V. Perez
Variety News Staff

L&S/Kyung-Seung and Fiesta Inter ended their season in the inaugural Men’s Open League on a winning note beating separate opponents on the final day of the elimination round last Sunday at the Susupe Sports Complex.
L&S and Fiesta both scored similar 2-0 wins over the Independents and the Pacific Telecom Inc. Guardians.
Solo goals from CNMI National 14-and-under coach Jahangir Hossain and Mohammed Jamil were enough insurance for L&S to claim their fourth win in five games.
Their lone loss was a 3-1 decision against Fiesta on Jan. 14 that ended their bid for a perfect season.
Bipo Hossain continued with his steady work as L&S’ goalkeeper in preserving the shutout victory.
Hossain was relentless in defending the goal blocking a last-ditch effort made by the Independents’ Becca Rath to complete the shutout.
Fiesta Inter, meanwhile, leaned on consecutive goals from Arky Reusora and Masatoshi Otsuka to beat the PTI Guardians, 2-0.
Raja Ram Tamrakar typified Fiesta Inter’s defense working double time blocking every shot that the Guardians made.
It was the second straight game in which the Guardians had been shut out in a match and their third in five outings.
Fiesta did not lose the whole season but drew with Real Mariana and Onwel.
Fiesta missed the services of ace player Jetsada Phonsutjit, who went on vacation to Thailand. He will also miss the Marcos Alonso Cup on Feb. 4.
Earlier, youth and talent prevailed over experience as Real Mariana escaped with a 4-1 victory over Korean One.
Real Madrid’s speed and tenacity proved too much for Korean One in a match that was closer than the final margin.
Jin Koo Cho scored early for Korean One but Real Madrid snatched the lead with back-to-back goals from Sin Yeop Kang.
Individual efforts by Choi Yoon Won and Brian Ko sealed the win for Real Mariana late in the second half.
In the first game, Onwel slipped to a 2-1 win over Alliance.
Lar Wongpanya and Chat Khamnuengchai stepped up for Onwel in the game as leading scorer Somboon Plaengrisi was a marked man during the entire match.
Lui Long scored for Alliance to avoid the shutout loss.
The Marcos Alonso Cup Championships will be held on Sunday at the Susupe field starting at 7:30 a.m. Onwel will face Real Mariana in the opening match.
They will be followed by the Alliance-PTI Guardians match at 8:45 a.m. At 10 a.m., Fiesta Inter will meet the Independents while Korean One clashes with L&S at 11:15 a.m.
The winners will advance to the semifinals, which will start at 12:30 p.m. The championship match will be played at 4 p.m.
The Marcos Alonso Cup is the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association’s tribute to one of its devoted supporters
