Airai, PCC lead way in PML

By Nazario Rodriguez Jr.
Horizon news staff

Airai edged out an equally strong team in Kayangel, 5-4, on Wednesday night in the 2007 Palau Major League at the Asahi Field.
The Aces, the 2004 champions, earlier defeated in succession Ngerbeched, 9-2, on Jan 8, Ngardmau, 5-2 on Jan 16 and Ngaraard, 20-3, on Jan 20.
The Aces’ next assignment will be against Ngerbeches on Saturday.
Joining the fray is another top favorite PCC Mesekiu, the only other team still undefeated in the league.
PCC opened up its campaign with a 8-4 win over Ngardmau Pirates on Jan 19 and a 24-3 victory over Koror on Jan 22.
As of presstime last night, PCC is leading over Ngerbeches, 3-0, in the bottom of the second inning.
Behind the superb pitching of starter Sureor Ngirailemesang and reliever Ty Saiske, Mesekiu quickly took the lead and let its potent offense put the game out of reach.
In six complete innings, Ngirailemesang struck out 12 ngardmau batters while Saiske struck out three in three innings.
Mesekiu got on board in the first inning on a single by leadoff batter Bedor Kyota, who then stole second base before coming home on a single by Dekei Ngiramengior.
PCC scored anew in the third on a single by catcher Cleofas Iyar, who went home with a standoff double by cleanup batter Melengis Uchel.
In the fourth inning, Mesekiu scored another run when Jason Mongkeya walked, stole second base and reached home on a single by Kyota.
Mesekiu took a commanding 6-3 lead in the fifth when Ngiramengior sent a 1-0 pitch deep over the left field fence for a solo homer.
Two more runs came in the fifth when Uchel and Ngirailemesang reached base on base-on-balls and single while Omsuul Yalap doubled down the leftfield line.
PCC scored two more in the sixth when Kyota and Ngiramengior reached for home on an error and Uchel tripled deep to left-of-center for two RBIs.
PCC completed its mastery off the Pirates as Ngiramengior scored again in the eight that sealed the game.
On Monday, PCC completely dominated Koror, whose players when it won back-to-back the previous seasons are the same frontliners of PCC this time.
The entire Mesekiu roster gamely fought with the young Koror players as they reached base and scored at will.
Veteran Kaleb Dulei was credited for the game as he struck out 10 batters and allowed only one hit.
Today’s game will be between Ngardmau and Ngaraard.
