The Ministry
of Education has announced yesterday that the 2007 Education Awareness
Week will be held on March 12-16.
The event will be held in Koror for the first time in six years and is
being funded by the Pacific Regional Initiative for Delivery of basic
Education (PRIDE) Project based in Suva, Fiji with the amount of $95,040.
All students from all schools, both public and private, will have opportunities
to participate in various competitive activities on all contest areas.
Students coming from outside of Koror will be billeted in different campus
in Koror.
They will also be provided meals and transportation to the venues.
Minister of Education Mario Katosang has informed President Remengesau
last week that the Organizing Committee is currently working with the
school principals and the chairmen of the Parents-Teachers Association
to plan the program activities as well as the preparation.
Katosang has asked the president for his full support as well as the different
ministries and various government agencies.
MOE Director Emery Wenty said the last time that such Education Awareness
Week was held in one venue in Koror was in 2001 but because of lack of
funding the different schools did it by themselves.
Some of the competitions would include sports and games, Palauan spelling
bee, traditional dances and chants, science fair and debate to name a
few.
Presidential Proclamation No. 01-99, which was signed on Feb. 26, 1999,
established the third week of March each year as Education Awareness Week.
During the week, competitive educational programs are promoted among the
students in both elementary and high schools.
Wenty said that the organizing committee is also planning to include Palau
Community College this time.
It would be recalled that in April 2006, the Education Summit was held
and that Education became a top priority thus the new 10-year Master Plan
was formulated to include the awareness week.
Student activities in all content areas of Palauan studies, match, science,
social studies, language arts, physical education, health and career guidance
will be developed in collaboration with parents and students implemented
throughout the awareness week.
Community members, other government agencies and the private sector will
serve as resource people, guest speakers, volunteers and officials for
the student activities.
