Haze moves away from Saipan, Tinian but health advisory remains

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

THE Emergency Management Office, in an advisory yesterday, said the haze was moving out of Saipan and Tinian.
Gov, Benigno R. Fitial and EMO, however, said the health advisory will remain in effect because although “concentrations of volcanic gases should be low, the haze and odor may bother people with respiratory problems.”
According to the advisory, gentle trade winds blowing northeast at 12 miles per hour are persisting over the Marianas.
The volcanic haze layer, it added, “has been lifted over Saipan and Tinian…. The winds have picked up from the northeast direction and should push the haze out of the area….”
Visibility, however, is still restricted on Rota.
During the past four days, the haze has affected at least 28 people on Saipan and Rota.
Most of the cases involved bronchitis, coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat and eye irritation.
