THE captain of a visiting
cruise ship, the Amadea, yesterday reminded the Commonwealth Ports Authority
of the importance of making fresh water and dry garbage disposal available
a the Saipan sea port.
CPA port manager Lee Cabrera and other officials met with Capt. Jens Thorn
and his chief purser Rebecca Wollny to award them a maiden port
call plaque of appreciation.
Thorn told Cabrera that fresh water and the opportunity to dispose of
dry garbage, particularly plastic, are two important factors in making
the port accessible to visiting cruise ships.
The German ship, according to Thorn, consumes 350 metric tons of fresh
water a day.
Fresh water is like gold to us, he said.
Also important is the means for disposing plastic garbage, he added.
This is because of the international law that prohibits ships from disposing
of garbage at sea.
Thorn said ships have incinerators on board but these are for wet garbage
only.
So these are the two recommendations I would certainly make to the
port here, he said.
The Amadea arrived here on Wednesday from Apia, Samoa and was scheduled
to leave for Iwo Jima at 5 p.m., yesterday.
Most of its passengers are from Germany..
