THE National
Weather Service says winds wont pick up speed until later this afternoon
or tomorrow and, as a result, the Guam Environmental Protection Agency
and the Guam Homeland Security/Civil Defense have extended the haze advisory
until tomorrow morning.
The haze, according to NWS, consists mostly of pollution from Asia and
some sea spray from the high surf advisory.
Yesterdays advisory stated that north winds blew the pollution over
the Marianas earlier this week.
Residents with respiratory ailments and heart problems are advised to
stay indoors and reduce physical exertion or outdoor activity during this
time. Anyone suffering from respiratory illness should seek appropriate
medical advice if they are affected by the reduced quality of outdoor
air, the advisory read.
Even healthy people may also experience some breathing problems, and eye
or nose irritations. Residents need to be aware of the haze.
If you were exposed, the symptoms may include a sore throat, persistent
cough, burning eyes, wheezing, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms,
general lack of energy, tightness of chest, and chest pains.
GEPA also advised the public to cease all burning activities until air
quality improves, and not to hang laundry outside to prevent any damage
to those items.
The advisory will expire before 12 noon Saturday unless the winds do not
pick up and GEPA feels the need to extend it once again.
