KAGMAN High School ended the regular season of the 2007 MISA High School Basketball League with victories against Marianas High School last Wednesday at the MHS Gym.
The Lady Ayuyus pulled off a 54-53 triumph over the Lady Dolphins to sweep the regular season.
Chelsea Ruluked fired 24 points, including seven of Kagman’s 12 points in the fourth period, to foil MHS’s upset bid.
With an undefeated record, the Lady Ayuyus will be the top-seeded team in the playoffs and will face Saipan Southern High School in the semifinals.
The Lady Dolphins, who are this year’s defending champion, finished the regular with a 1-5 record and are tied with the Rays.
MHS grabbed the No. 3 seeding as it beat Southern by four points in their first meeting on Jan. 26, 45-41. The Lady Rays won their second outing on Feb. 16, 50-48.
The playoffs in the girls’ division will start on Wednesday with the Lady Ayuyus squaring off with the Lady Rays for the first finals berth at 4:30 p.m.
No. 2 team Mt. Carmel, which ended the regular season with a 4-2 slate, battles the Lady Dolphins for the second and last finals ticket at 6:30 p.m.
In the boys’ division, the Ayuyus avenged their loss to MHS in their first outing after posting an 84-78 win.
MHS and Kagman both finished the regular season with a 3-3 record, but the former will be seeded second going into the playoffs beating the latter in the tiebreak points. The Ayuyus won by six points against the Dolphins, who beat Kagman by nine in their first meeting, 80-71, on Feb. 7.
Kagman and MHS will meet in the semis next Friday at 4:30 p.m. before the Rays-Knights tiff in the second match at 6 p.m.
Southern swept the regular season, while Mt. Carmel was winless in six games.
Although Kagman knew that it would face MHS in the semis regardless of the results of last Wednesday’s game, the Ayuyus needed the victory to settle the score and have some momentum going into the playoffs.
Keoni Chariton had his best game in the regular season nailing 28 points.
He and Allen Moses drilled crucial baskets in the fourth period helping Kagman escape with a six-point win.
Moses, who played in his first game this season, scored all his eight points in the fourth quarter.
The final canto started with MHS still leading by a deuce, 62-60, until Chariton and Moses joined forces and helped Kagman post a come-from-behind win. The Ayuyus also got contributions from Jon Ada, Steve Tellei and Don Teregeyo in the fourth period.
MHS’s bid to down the Ayuyus for the second straight time failed, as only Jayvan Tarkong and Kevin Aldan nailed fieldgoals in the fourth quarter. Aldan had three triples, while Tarkong added four points.
Ivan De Vero and Jericho Cruz fouled out midway in the fourth period. De Vero, who had 16 points after three quarters, was held to one point in the fourth due to foul trouble, while Cruz after scoring 12 points was scoreless in the fourth.
