Daniel, Jeremiah duel for the Promised Land

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

DANIEL and Jeremiah collide tomorrow for the championship trophy in the 2nd Calvary International Mission-Filipino Community Church Inter-Color Basketball League-Genesis Invitational Cup at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
Jeremiah nailed the first finals berth after beating Joshua in the semifinals, 106-96, last Saturday, while Daniel advanced to the title match after downing Caleb, 106-97.
Daniel won the pennant with an 8-1 record and grabbed an automatic semis slot. Jeremiah finished with a 7-2 slate and had to prevail over Nehemiah and Joshua in the playoffs to move a step closer to the Promised Land.
Incidentally, Daniel’s lone loss in the tournament was at the hands of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah posted an 89-81 triumph over Daniel in their meeting on Dec. 7.
Young guns Rowell Aranda and Jon Lim led Jeremiah’s upset win firing 26 and 20 points, respectively.
Jun Estolas, who failed to play for Jeremiah in its lone meeting with Daniel, and Errol Peredo are expected to add headaches to the pennant champion when they square off for the title at 8 p.m.
Estolas scored in double figures against Nehemiah and Caleb, while Peredo notched 26 points each in Jeremiah’s last two games.
Jeremiah is known for its fast-paced game as it also has Kevin Cequena on its roster. Cequena scored 36 points in Jeremiah’s semis win over Joshua.
If speed and youth are Jeremiah’s edge over Daniel, the pennant champion has a deeper bench.
Elmer Esdrelon, Ric Alegre, Junar Guiab, Dennis Vinas and James Abuy started for Daniel in its last game. When these five players lose steam, they still have Fando Muleta, Gyles Ruluked, Tom Alegre, Leo Factor and Jun Tabora.
Before the finals tiff, Joshua and Caleb square off for the consolation trophy at 6 p.m.
The awarding of team and individual trophies will be held after the championship fight.
Meanwhile, league commissioner Noel Puno thanked CIM, Coca-Cola, Hermans Bakery, Harmony Motor Works, D&Q, PMUS Cargo, Philpan, FCC members, Genesis Cup staff, team managers, coaches and players for being part of the tournament.
Puno also thanked Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL. Maximo, Pastors Pang Kok Hiong, Lyte Chapap and Ramir Trinidad, Ed Deang, Joe Liza,a Abner Venus, Elias Rangamar, Danny Badiles, Efren Sacopla, John Penalosa, Greg and Ruth De Leon, Ester Santos, Linda Lam, Zenas Chapap and Janet Datinginoo for their support in the Genesis Cup.
