Former Venezuelan national player Michael Steinmetz scored two goals in the first 45-minute of play to lead a team of predominantly Bangladeshi nationals in beating Surangel and Sons, 2-1, in the championship game of the 2007 Palau Football Association goodwill tournament last Sunday at the PCC track and field.
Earlier in the day, a team of Nepalese nationals defeated Palau Tiger Team, 4-2, in the battle for third place.
Steinmetz’s teammates as well as a big crowd of Asian fans swarmed him just as the referees signaled the end of the match and the Bangladeshis regained the crown they had lost to the same Surangel team in the previous tournament.
The 23-year old Venezuelan said he once represented his country in the 17-year old category in the prestigious Caribbean leagues.
Andy Johnson scored the lone goal for Surangel halfway through the second half but the team lack in experience compared to the Bangladeshis, who national passtime is the game of soccer or football.
Surangel is a team composed of mostly Americans with the Palau Mission Academy.
PFA President Darryl Lund said that this is the best season ever for football in Palau.
The championship game will be aired on Channel 23 tomorrow starting at 8 p.m.
Lund said that they are planning to hold a follow-up tournament next month due to the success of the just-concluded soccer season.
