EUTHANASIA, which some believe
may help address the problem of homeless or stray animals in the CNMI,
will soon be an available option here.
Department of Land and Natural Resources Secretary Dr. Ignacio Dela Cruz
said he has received his license to order euthanasia drugs.
He said severely debilitated and unwanted animals can be euthanized, but
to do so, Dela Cruz said you have to be a licensed veterinarian
with a controlled substance registration certificate from the Drug Enforcement
Administration.
Euthanasia was among the ideas brought up by members of the Beautify CNMI!s
animal welfare committee during last months meeting.
According to Dela Cruz, euthanasia can be part of the local animal control
program.
A 1995 law was passed for the creation of a stray dog control program
though it has yet to be funded.
Dela Cruz said the government has limited means when it comes to treating
severely ill animals and can only provide medicine for deworming, vaccinations
and skin diseases.
In such cases, euthanasia may be the best solution.
Tinian, he said, is already implementing an animal control program, and
is also considering the use of euthanasia.
