Attending AG school

SOME of us are concerned about the direction and effectiveness of the Office of the Attorney General of Guam over the next four years. Early actions of the new AG imply an operating mode directly antithetical to that practiced by Guam’s first elected Attorney General, Douglas Moylan.
He was a hard charger for his entire term, ruffling many feathers along the way, but at least you always knew where he stood on important issues.
Conversely, AG Limtiaco avoids taking an unwavering stand on anything the least bit controversial, seemingly adrift in a sea of indecision and uncertainty. Media interviews generally lead nowhere. Pointed questions are blunted by an apparent determination to avoid any hint of offense or confrontation at all costs. Warnings of dire consequences for illegal acts soon lose credibility and effect through failure to follow through.
Perhaps it’s too soon to be making these kinds of assessments. Perhaps our AG will eventually take firm control of the office and aggressively address the job at hand. Perhaps she’ll eventually stop playing nice and become the kind of tough-on-crime, no-holds-barred attorney general that Guam needs so badly. Time will tell.
