FOUR experts from the University
of Hawaiis department of geology and geophysics are arriving today
to investigate Managahas seasonal movement,
The Coastal Resources Management Office, according to its natural resources
planner Kathy Yuknavage, contracted the University of Hawaii in Manoa
to model the sand processes around the famous tourist spot.
The study, Yuknavage said in an e-mail, is being done through funding
from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and in coordination
with the Department of Public Lands and Tasi Tours Inc.
She said the investigators led by Dr. Chip Fletcher have completed the
first phase of the study and will conduct further physical analyses on
the island.
The final phase of the study, Yuknavage added, will provide the CNMI with
pertinent information about the seasonal movement of Managaha, which will
include a better understanding of how much further the island may be expected
to move in the next few years and if any important infrastructure may
be at risk in the future.
