Motocross racers discover expert riding in Umatac

By R. Vincent Tupaz
For Variety

THE Motocross community on Guam took the quaint village of Umatac by storm over the past two weekends as racers converged upon Discovery Day Activities to show what they have to offer.
Rob Bucek spokesperson for the Guam Motorcycle and Atv Corporation said that the past two weekends had the “the islands quickest atv racers” in Umatac. He explained that the motocross event was part of Guam’s Discovery Day celebration hosted by the villagers of Umatac. A course was built for the race located directly next to the Umatac Bridge.
Bucek said the race and festivities had all the makings of a carnival like atmosphere with a huge crowd on hand. “The GMAC atv racers hit the track for some exciting bumping, sliding and high flying racing,” stated Bucek. He added that there were two heats for race because of the sheer interest from racers to take part in the action. “With so many competitors signing up for the race in the Open Atv division and the course being very tight and short the class had to be split into two a novice and an expert division.”
Bucek offered a recap of finshes.
“In the expert Open Atv class Robert Santos swept the first weekends event with Bucek aboard a Suzuki Cycles Plus Shell Ltr-450 taking second. Jason Wassom placed third. During the most recent weekend, perseverance paid off for Wassom who took the win and the overall Discovery Day Championship in the Open Atv expert division. Taking second aboard his Honda was long time vet racer Roberto Pitter. The final spot on the podium went to #1Bucek.”
In the Novice Open Atv class Donavan Pitter took the first weekend event rather easily, they quickly moved him to the Expert Open Atv class where he put in another strong showing placing fourth for that weekend. Placing in second was Ron Corpuz on a borrowed Honda and taking third on that first weekend was Bill Windham.
“On the final weekend of the Novice Open Atv, Andy Painter rode strong and consistent making no mistakes to take the win and the overall. Windham also rode a consistent race to take second overall with Ron Corpuz who had suffered a flat rear tire still managing to take third.
In the Open Women Atv class Sade Pitter on a Honda put on a strong performance sweeping both weekends events there by taking the overall win with Kelly Simpson aboard a Suzuki taking second overall.
In the Mini Midrange division, a youth class Bucek stated that Blair Bates was amazing. “He completely dominated on the Hetricks Racing prepared machine by sweeping all of the heats in that respective division,” said Bucek. Taking second was Trevor Eustaquio on a Kawasaki who has been the dominating force at this year’s Guam Moto-X Championships. Placing third was Yamaha mounted Ramon Torres.
In the 50cc Atv kids class Stoney Bucek aboard the Cycles Plus Kawasaki did what his father, Bucek, could not by taking the win during each of the two weekends events for the overall win. Placing in second was AJ Windham with third place being taken by Yamaha racer Devin Chiguina.
The next GMAC event on the schedule will be on March 18th at the Calvo Memorial Off-Road Park located within the Guam International Raceway,” stated Bucek. He added, racing is set to start at 1pm and will be free to all to come and watch. The event will be round 4 of the 2007 ten round Guam Moto-X Championships. “
Bucek reminded race fans, “This will be the last opportunity for the GMAC to hold a race before the April 13 through the 15 scheduled major international event the Shell Miller Lite 25 th Annual Smokin Wheels. GMAC’s website at AtvMotocrossGuam.com.
