A POLICE sergeant on Rota fell asleep while driving his pick-up but was not injured even after the vehicle struck some trees.
Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro Uludong said Steven M. Mendiola sustained no injuries in the accident that happened on Sunday in Tatgua, Rota.
Investigation disclosed that Mendiola’s Toyota Hilux pick-up truck struck some trees on the shoulder of the northbound lane.
Mendiola fell asleep while traveling northeast and lost control of his vehicle.
He was off duty when the incident happened.
DPS reported that it was raining that morning and the road was wet and slippery.
When asked if Mendiola was under the influence of liquor while driving the vehicle, Uludong said it wasn’t indicated in the report and the traffic investigation has ruled out DUI as a factor in the crash.
