GOP ‘reforming’ precinct clubs

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

THE NMI Republican Party is now in the process of “reforming” its precinct clubs, GOP president Thomas B. Pangelinan revealed last Tuesday.
But Precinct 4 club officers said the ongoing selection of new precinct leaders is being done by the central committee without even consulting them.
In an telephone interview, Pangelinan said they will find “capable and competent” precinct leaders who, under the new bylaws, will serve for two years.
One of the amendments to the party bylaws adopted last month allows the board of directors to appoint all precinct club leaders.
The precinct leaders will elect the precinct club officers who will then work with the central committee in choosing the GOP’s legislative candidates.
The party’s Precinct 4 club officers are insisting that they have already chosen their two candidates for the House of Representatives — Sylvetre Iguel and Barbara Yamada.
