Elgin Elwais continued to add feather to his cap by winning anew a gold
medal at the just concluded Oceania Wrestling Championships in Hamilton,
New Zealand.
Franson Gibbons also showed a lot of guts against an opponent from Australia
in the Geco Roman eevent.
Elwais won the in the finals against Shane Parker of Australia in the
55kg Greco match.
"His match was awesome because Australia had a very strong wrestler
who came in to wrestle and was very good but Elgin was fierce," playing-coach
John Tarkong.
Tarkong said that Elwaiss match "was so exciting because no
matter what the Australian did, Elgin countered and eventually picked
him up and slammed him a number of times to win both three-minute periods
of the match.
"Elgin did not let the Australian score one point on the match,"
he said.
"Franson did well and even threw one of his opponents during the
match but lost after a number of tough matches," Tarkong said.
Gibbons placed 4th in the 66kg while Tarkong also placed 4th in the 96kg
weight division.
Tarkong said that he would have probably won two of his matches if it
were not for mistakes.
He said he was leading well in both matches against Australia and threw
his opponent for three points but lost his match after he tried to throw
his opponent and his opponent countered for the win.
"We all had tough matches today especially because of this year will
be the beginning of the qualification year for the Olympics and it will
be at the World Championships. I think we'll do very well in the upcoming
SPG but only if we have good training partners and more competitions and
funding support," Tarkong said.
Also doing well was Keitani Graham of Chuuk, FSM who has been training
in Palau over the past year and traveled with the team to compete in the
Oceania.
"Keitani did well and placed 2nd for the Silver medal as well. He
had about 5 matches and beat New Zealand, Australia and Samoa but lost
to another Aussie, who is Iranian and used to be the Asian Champion in
1999," Tarkong said.
He said that there were lots of Europeans (Russians and Iranians) who
are real good and are now wrestling for Australia and New Zealand.
"We're cutting weight now and will wrestle freestyle on Sunday. Believe
it or not but I went from 105 kg down to 96 and made it<" he said.
"Over 20 some pounds. It was tough. The four-day training session
in the Philippines really helped as well," he said.
