Fiji woman receives Major US award

SUVA (Pacnews) — Fiji Women’s Crisis Center co-ordinator Shamima Ali has been awarded a major United States of America award for courage.
U.S. Ambassador to Fij Larry Dinger named Ali an honoree in the inaugural International Women of Courage award.
“Ms Ali is one of many remarkable women of Fiji who deserve recognition on this International Women’s Day,” Dinger said.
“Since the December coup, women have been at the forefront in calling for a rapid return to democracy and for the respect of human rights,” he said.
He said many women face intimidation or physical abuse for being so open and the U.S. admires and salutes them for their commitment and courage.
“Ms Ali has consistently spoken out to denounce abuse of women and children and to offer practical programs and services to combat such violence against women and children.
