Nitsch Herdert, who holds
three world records in free diving, is here in Palau for several activities
from February 26 to March 7.
Free diving literally means diving without using the oxygen tank.
The 36-year old Herdert and two other Austrian divers conducted a free
lesson among local dive shop people on Friday night at the NECO Marine.
The session was to promote free diving and its different techniques and
as a form of competition.
"I never went to school for this," said Herdert, the former
pilot who said he owns the world record of 111 meters (swimming) and 183
meters or about 600 feet with vest.
It was in Egypt that Herdert set the record of nine minutes and four seconds
in Dec. 2005.
The other two Austrian divers were Dafert Wolfang, a 32-year old psychologist
and Schrader Marcus, a 40-year old Geologist.
Herdert said that free diving is much easier because its not dangerous.
There are people to help you, but if theres no one you will face
a problem," he said.
The three Austrian divers shared their experience in other parts of the
world like in Mexico and the Red Sea, presenting videos to some 20 individuals
who showed up at the session.
They also talked about how they execute their dives like preferring more
weight while coming down.
"But everybody has philosophies about the weight. But then it is
hard to relax when you are heavy," he said.
Herdert shrugged off the notion that eating before diving is dangerous
saying that "when you dont eat, your metabolism goes down."
