SAN Vicente Elementary School dethroned 2006 champion William S. Reyes after pulling off a 10-8 victory in the championship match in the 2007 Wells Fargo/PSS Interscholastic boys’ Basketball Tournament last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
The Canaries held the Kingfishers to a free throw in the second half to rule the 10-team tournament.
The championship match was played in two halves with seven-playing minutes for each half.
At the end of the first half, WSR was leading at 7-6.
The second half was a helter-skelter game with both teams struggling to nail a basket. In the last one minute of the game, San Vicente grabbed the lead, 10-8.
With no 24-shotlock rule implemented in the tournament, San Vicente just ran out the clock to escape with a 2-point win.
Earlier, the Canaries leaned on Daniel Agulto’s Hail Mary shot to eke out a 14-12 victory against Garapan Elementary school in the semifinals.
With the game tied at 12-all, Agulto pulled off a fallaway jumper a few inches away from the 15-foot line and made the basket at the buzzer.
WSR grabbed the second finals berth beating Koblerville Elementary School , 15-8.
After a frustrating two-point loss to San Vicente, Garapan vented its ire on the Koblerville Umang posting a 24-19 victory in the battle for third place match.
The six other teams that competed in the annual tournament were Dandan Elementary School, San Antonio, Gregorio T. Camacho, Oleai, Tanapag and Kagman.
Meanwhile, tournament organizer Francis Mendiola thanked Wells Fargo for supporting this year’s PSS caging.
Wells Fargo donated $1,000, which was used to purchase trophies and other things needed for the boys’ and girls’ competitions.
Kagman won the girls’ championship downing Koblerville on March 3.
Mendiola also thanked the staff of the Division of Sports and Recreation and the parents who watched the games and supported their kids.
